No such thing as a free lunch on British Airways

The recession is biting the travel industry hard and as our sister online publication Off Radar recently reported "No such thing as a free lunch on the Oasis of the Seas". Now its the turn of British Airways who as of this coming Monday will eliminate all free meals sandwiches and drinks on short haul flights.

Not even a simple bottle of water will be served for free on flights less than 2.5 hours long! This is a sad reflection of the airline industry today in the west, as one of the mighty carriers that once prided itself in quality service succumbs to the age of low service.

No longer can BA distinguish itself as a much better overall service experience than rivals EasyJet, as the meal was really the last tangible in-flight deliverable left. It would be true to say that BA's Monopoly on Terminal 5 gives it a better airport experience at Heathrow T5 at least, but the line is wafer thin between the service levels of many Budget carriers and BA right now.

The general service and over-penny pinching of Ryanair still places it a level below BA and then EasyJet, however FlyBe and other low cost outfits provide a reasonable comparative service at an affordable price.

It appears to me that BA's decision to axe its Budget wing GO some years ago now was a disastrous decision in hindsight for the middle to long term fortunes of BA.

As the lines of differentiation and product merge, at Perpetual Traveller we also learn that BA will replace bottles of water on longer flights with small "Cuplets" and hot towels will only be the reserve for First Class passengers.

BA were keen to stress that passengers on all flights will receive a small drink and bag of savoury snacks instead. Sounds like Alitalia to me and look what happened to them!

The degrading of the service was brought about by Mark Hassel, BA's new head of customer experience, no doubt under pressure to slash costs due to the operating losses BA have recently incurred.

It all sounds like a U Turn to us at Perpetual Traveller, as CEO Willie Walsh vowed just 2 weeks ago to "focus on customers". Sounds like he meant to focus on what BA can take away from customers! Union chiefs are reported to have stated concerns that the move could backfire and drive thousands of loyal customers away to competitors.

Let's see if other major carriers crack and opt for the degrading of their services too under the current climate! The age of comfortable quality service air travel in Europe is following America and sinking fast. Let's hope Asia and the middle east holds out to keep luxury air travel alive.

The top ten most expensive cities in the world!

As a Perpetual Traveller reader no doubt you have considered to move to another city or country at some juncture in your life. Sometimes the decision of relocation is yours and other times its forced on you somewhat by your Company, circumstance or even a loved one! Some Perpetual Travellers relocate frequently and even get the 2 year itch, after all life is a journey and not a destination!

Whatever the case there are some crucial things you should know, before you turn a move into a reality. The most important issue is to appreciate whether you can maintain your current level of quality life in your newly selected home, by carefully considering the economic realities on the ground in your potential new destination in comparison with your salary or how much money you have or that will likely be generated. Many dreams have been shattered for lack of planning and wide range home economic accounting. Moreover, you must always factor in potential currency changes, worst case scenarios and the "Boom and Bust" cycles, which we were all reminded about in 2008.

Here follows the best rule of the thumb tool available you can utilise to check out the city you intend to live in. It features the top ten most expensive cities of the world, according to Mercers 2009 survey of cost of living. If your new home is near the top, unless you have a dream salary in a downturn or you are a prepared millionaire, you may want to think twice. The list also helps tourists and casual visitors appreciate where they can get the best value for their currency.

Since the last survey of 2007 there have been some interesting changes. Firstly, Tokyo Knocked Moscow off the top, becoming the most expensive city to live or own a house in worldwide! European cities dominate the list except its notable that London is not present, which due to the sinking pound dropped 13 places since 2007 to rank 16th overall. London subsequently offers the best value currently for the Mega cities on our planet and still offers the greatest value in air travel. Meanwhile, New York joins the top 10 list.

1. TOKYO

Awarded the most expensive city on the planet! If you are the type who desires eternal lashings of Sushi, then you should still seriously consider moving to the city of glitz unless you have the cash of course! Certainly Tokyo is not by any stretch of the imagination boring, as it features bright lights and great entertainment districts and quiet gardens to contrast. However, everything costs a pretty Yen!

2. OSAKA

Competing with Tokyo and slightly in the shadow, Osaka was historically the commercial capital of Japan. It has achieved great fame as the Mecca of gourmet food in Japan. Although the cost of living in Osaka is lower than Tokyo, it still represents a small fortune to live comfortably there. Nevertheless, in Osaka you can eat well and it is still possible to rough it cheaply and easily.

3. MOSCOW

Seeing Moscow rank so high is actually a surprise to many. Moscow’s position as the third most expensive place to live on the globe has mostly to do with the continued rising cost of accommodation. For a medium level apartment in the centre of Moscow one is likely to spend around $2500 to $3500 a month. Moscow still is one of the most classic cities of Europe and it can offer an array of choices, although Hotels and Restaurants are expensive for the visitor and there are many money traps to fall into. Its best to know someone there you trust to help you navigate the twists and turns of local business rules and culture.

4. GENEVA

Is the most expensive city in Europe, considering Moscow is outside. Accommodation, energy and insurance policies seem to be the most expensive stealth taces of life in Geneva. Food and Hotels are not too bad though for the visitor with all ranges catered for.

5. HONG KONG

Victoria Peak, harbour junks, quick access to mainland China and a sophisticated mix of ethnic races share the highlights of Hong Kong. This city is extraordinary and offers a multitude of fascinating experiences for visitors and residents alike. Hidden markets, nearby islands and lovely local beaches make Hong Kong worth every Dollar say many. The cost of living in Hong Kong is notably high however compared to other Asian countries. Everything in Hong Kong can be expensive from apartment’s rentals, to leisure expenses to basic commodities. Food stalls are reasonable though and if you plan well Hotels are affordable.

6. ZURICH

First class banking institutions, high-quality luxury goods and truly spectacular winter landscapes. Zurich considers itself as being a self-disciplined city, including the efficiency in which the businesses and services operate. Many locals are still devoutly faithful to the traditional customs and way of life. The convenience and benefits of living in Zurich come at a steep price though. A high cost of living in all circles, but the price is worth it for those that desire a dependable, timely well organised city.

7. COPENHAGEN

According to the survey this is the most expensive Scandinavian city. Despite Copenhagen’s relatively consistent high cost of living over the past decade, the level has actually fallen by 10% compared to the 2008 survey.

8. NEW YORK

New York is the only city of U.S included within the top ten mega expensive category and its a recent entry too. From Central Park to Manhattan’s skyscraper jungle, one can find just about anything in the Big Apple. Great food (especially Italian), tempting shopping outlets and a truly magnificent night life. New York is centre of the world to many including the United Nations and considering its image position it has to present the best value in the Top Ten, especially with a weak Dollar and a competitive market. The exceptionally high taxes for residents are the main drain though.

9. BEIJING

Generally Beijing is relatively cheap compared to Europe or North America, but still it is one of the most expensive among cities in Asia. Sights in Beijing are things that will define your impressions; historical sites, beautiful landscapes and sprawling parks make Beijing a walkers dream. At Perpetual Traveller we feel this city will rise in proportional cost in the next decade, so try to see it now the Olympics have passed and its still affordable.

10. SINGAPORE

If you like clean living and logical order, Singapore will not let you down, as this is the Swiss city of Asia. The environment comes first with plenty of green throughout. Singapore is unquestionably the most cosmopolitan city in Asia. If you can afford $9.701 per Sq. just think how close you would be to the rest of Asia with affordable air travel and the worlds No. 1 consistent service airline in the last two decades.

So there you have it a tale of ten cities! We trust this information was useful for your future relocation planning and we welcome your comments with personal experiences.

Greetings from London Heathrow

Greetings from an overcrowded and tired Terminal 3 at London Heathrow! With all the hype and attention on Terminal 4 and 5 in recent years, the others are looking worse for wear. In particular Terminals 1 and 2 have reached the point of no return, as they cannot be patched up any more. The new Spanish operator that bought BAA are bargaining with the British Government to invest in combining Terminals 1 and 2 (completely new development) in exchange for a third Runway. The environmentalists and locals will love that!

So if you are not flying with BA (see new BA article) and you are going to the older Terminals of Heathrow, expect a crowded, low ceiling feeling and rough around the edges experience.

Suspected Smugglers Scuttle Semi-Submersible Drug Sub

On Monday (7/27) a coordinated effort by U.S. Customs and Border Protection's Office of Air and Marine, and the U.S. Coast Guard led to the interdiction of a self-propelled semi-submersible drug smuggling vessel in the Eastern Pacific.

According to a statement from CBP, the crew of a P-3 Orion surveillance plane spotted the vessel and the U.S. Coast Guard was sent to intercept it. But, before the Coast Guard could seize the semi-submersible sub and its suspected cargo of drugs, its four-person crew evacuated, got in an inflatable raft and scuttled the vessel.

What makes Munich Airport popular?

Hot summer 09 greetings from a mild Munich Airport, a facility that is reported to be one of Europe's best. So what makes this airport so popular?

Is it the bright shiny granite looking floors or the Germanic organisation? The long efficient Schindler walkways maybe or the rather unique retail area that includes a SPA, Sex Shop and high street type boutiques in the mix? Perhaps its the presence of window to window light filled glass, featuring glass fronted shops, a cluster of Camel sponsored glass Smoking cubicles (highly frequented and no Flu masks in here) and glass backed Cafes.

Or even my favourite the Viennese Sausages with bread for 4.90 euro and the Napcab a little safe sanctuary of privacy. The Napcab is in essence a cubicle in the middle of gate H32 with a bed, screen, table, Internet connection, atmospheric lighting and of course a glass door! It costs 10 euro per hour from 10pm - 6am, then 15 euro outside these times (minimum consumption 30 euro). It is a neat little idea and could prove to be a great alternative to the VIP Lounge. I also like the little details at Munich airport, like the picture of a fly inside the porcelain urinal! At first sight you think its real, then when you realise they all have a fly in the same spot, it helps you aim!

Munich airport is not all perfect though and there are some down sides too, which makes one wonder how it figures so well. For start there is a touch of LHR Terminal 1, with that low cieling feeling. There are no escalators for people with flight connections that have to change levels. The shops are varied but few in number and many close at 9pm, which I consider far too early. Even Cafes close early and they tend to be under-staffed, often leaving uncleared dirty tables and queues.

Nevertheless Munich overall scores well and its nice to see something different to the usual cloning that takes place at airports, so well done Munich for that!

When the holidaymaker is away the thieves will play!

As we enter the traditional peak holiday season throughout Europe and people leave their work en-mass for the popular beach resorts across the Mediterranean and beyond, the thieves come out in force to prey on your possessions whilst you are not there to protect them.
This year we expect the trend of burglaries to notably rise across Europe, especially in peak season and under the climate of a deep recession. Imagine coming home to dis¬cover that your front or back door has been kicked in or side window smashed open and your first view upon return is to see what is left of your possessions scattered across the floor of your house or apartment. Counting the cost of possessions is only part of the nightmare that will follow, as dealing with the insurers if any will always be a challenge as they desperately seek loopholes not to pay you. The emotional cost and feeling of insecurity will likely set in also, causing you potentially months of torment.

To ensure that this is not your reality, it is important to take the matter seriously and adopt a prevention is better than an insurance cure approach, as summer is always a prime time for thieves without morals to make their move and cash in on your absence. To illustrate the rise in crime in England and Wales Home Office figures show that one Burglary takes place every 20 seconds, so there is no time to lose to protect your security.

Here below is the Perpetual Traveller Guide to your vacation security, which will empower you to outsmart the thieves and rest at ease on vacation.

RULES OF PREVENTION

ANALYSE
• Think like a thief. Put yourself in their shoes and take a long hard look at your property.
• Imagine approaching your property the way a thief would.
• Look for weaknesses in your security in an objective way.
• Adopt method acting tactics as you walk around your property.
• Remember that thieves always follow the path of least resistance, meaning they opt for the easy target.
• Ensure that your property is not an easy target, but rectifying the weaknesses.
• Follow the helpful Top Tips below to support your increased home security plan.
GET INSURED
• What kind of insurance do you have?
• According to research in the insurance conscious UK 1 out of every 4 households does not have home
contents in¬surance.
• This means that if your possessions are stolen or ruined because of a burglary, you have no way of recouping
the loss.
• You need to be informed about your insur¬ance policy though and read that boring hard to see fine print.
• If know what is and is not covered it will help you act ac¬cordingly and take the right precautions.
• Beware, as Insurance companies love loopholes that can get them out of paving up.
• To illustrate, if a burglar slips in through an open window, or uses a ladder that you left lying around in the garden to break into your house, you are automatically not covered?
DANGER LURKS IN THE GARDEN
• With more and more hous¬es boasting security alarms these days, thieves are now ceasing the opportunity to raid garden sheds, garages and greenhouses for some quick cash.
• The humble shed may not seem that appealing to you, but ordinarily it is complete with several expensive DIY and pow¬er tools that are easily pocket¬ed in car boot sales or on the black market to pocket quick cash.
• Most sheds are secured by a rusty or weak padlock, which takes a couple of screws if that to open.
• Check that your garden’s outbuildings are covered by your home insurance policy.
• Think about investing in some floodlights along with a mains or battery-operated alarm.
• Remember that thieves might steal garden equipment, but they can also use it to break into your house.
• Do not to leave anything lying around that could be used to get in, as your insurance may not cover you.
TOP TIPS TO KEEPING THIEVES AT BAY
Keep your windows and doors locked: This sounds blatantly obvious and rather bizarre, however a recent UK poll found that as much as 29% of all Bur¬glaries in 2008 were entirely unforced, meaning that thieves entered houses and apartments through open windows or unlocked doors.
Hide your valuables: Of course remember where you put them. Some secret places are so good, that ones forgets where they are and then finding them can be a challenge.
Assess your public profile: For example, do you really need to keep your Computer or Smart phone right by the window, in plain view from the street? Be warned that some in¬surance companies do not pay on claims whereby certain valuables, such as jewels, are not stored in a suitably secure loca¬tion within your home.
Photograph your valuables: This may appear an odd thing to do, however if you get burgled, photos provide a record and evidence of what's missing when you make a claim. Police can also use the photos to identify your possessions if the thief is by some miracle caught.
Purchase a burglar alarm: An alarm is every thief's worst enemy, so be sure to set it every time you leave the house or go to bed. Hav¬ing it tested every three months will keep it in good work¬ing order, too.
Invest in a home security system: If this is a too bitter financial pill, augment your existing Burglar alarm with a digital security system. Cameras record any movement in your home and can send the data straight to your mobile phone.
Install motion-detector lights: The brighter the better! Opportunist Burglars in particular loath be¬ing exposed. To increase the security level, mount them high up on the wall to illuminate a wider area.
Apply anti-climb paint: Have You ever tried to climb a wall covered in anti-climb paint? Well its nigh impossible and this is a slick idea. If it is too much, a simple thorny trel¬lis beneath your windows provide a reasonable deterrent to the light part time thief.
Shower securely: Steamy windows tell all would be intruders that you are upstairs bathing and subsequently too busy to stop a break-in. Always lock all windows and doors before jumping in the shower.
Fit a timer switch: Noise, lights and drawn curtains are less attractive to a potential intruder than an obviously vacant home. In the event you are away on vacation, timers can be attached to lights, radios and televisions to give the impression that someone is actually at home. The are some switches that provide up to 6 on & off settings a day, complemented with random settings to erase all measures of pre¬dictability. At the very least it can prove to be sufficient to make any potential burglar think twice.
Do not hide spare keys: It is common knowledge amongst all Burglars professional or otherwise to instinctively know where all those 'under the door¬mat' tactics are to hiding keys. Always leave your keys with a trusted friend or neighbor instead. If a Burglar can get in without force, this is his ideal case scenario and moreover your insurance policy will usually void your claim too. Don't be gone for too long
Plan a stay: If you're planning a vacation, arrange for some¬one to stay over at least once, especially if you are gone for up to a month. Ask them first to clear out your moun¬tains of mail, which is the classic “green light” of thieves. Then to keep your plants watered and to look out for any suspicious activity in the area.
So there you have it, the Perpetual Traveller Guide to maintaining a safe home whilst you are on vacation. We trust that you find this useful.
Have a peace of mind vacation

Airports are becoming scary places!

Airports are becoming scary places these days with travellers wearing face masks due to Swine Flu concerns, the fear of liquids remains with security personnel that are sure to make you feel away from home and it seems the most friendly face in an airport in 2009 is that of a self check-in screen!

The realities of Swine Flu are covered in our special Perpetual Traveller feature A Peak Season Swine FLU FREE holiday. It seems to be quietly and rapidly spreading under radar of mass media.

It dawned on me that the situation must be getting serious as personnel from 3 different airports I visited this week in Europe thrust a H1N1 warning leaflet in mind hand. Our above mentioned PT article gives you the updated facts, details how to protect yourself during this peak travel summer season and answers your FAQ's.

What happened to Duty Free?

Seasonal summer greetings from the Marco Polo Airport of Venice, where a new first floor extension was recently opened in the Departure area, but its nothing to get excited about as its boils down to a little extra floor space, a couple of VIP Lounges, a Cafe and some over-priced commonly branded shops.

Did you ever wonder what happened to the great Duty Free experience and deals of the past? In Europe anyhow Duty Free was destroyed by the VAT taking EU. Airports all of the world seem to be more expensive than the high street today though. International airports maybe Duty Free, but they are certainly not profit free, nor are they free from extraordinary high rents from Airport Operators, which natural impacts on consumer prices. Moreover, leading luxury brands these days are focussed on positioning, marketing and hyping up products that are more often than not made in China or somewhere else in Asia even if the brand is essentially European or American.

A Peak Season Swine FLU FREE holiday

As we enter the traditional peak summer season and following our last PT article on the Swine Flu critical alert pandemic on the 9th May 2009, from what we understand its clear that the highly reported Flu is rapidly spreading at an alarmingly fast rate and this reality is poised to clash with summer tourism in the popular holiday haunts of the masses.Yet, it seems that the mass media is bored with the topic, as Swine Flu gains pace before our eyes and much of the population across our planet remains apathetic to the risks involved.
The greatest fear is whether Swine Flu migrates or evolves into a more resistant and potentially deadly strain. Its a perfectly plausible scenario and we maybe sleep walking into a harsh reality this summer.

This PT article is designed to give you the updated facts and advice what to do to protect yourself when travelling.

WORST HIT DESTINATIONS

Britain has the third highest number of confirmed cases of the virus in the world, just behind Mexico (where the outbreak began) and the United States. Laboratory tests showed that yesterday there were 9,718 confirmed cases in the UK. This was just behind Mexico, with 10,262 cases. The U.S. is in pole position with 33,902 confirmed cases and the highest number of deaths recorded being in New York.

SWINE FLU ANALYSIS

Most Swine Flu hospitalisations are in fact among people with underlying medical conditions as follows...

➢  32% asthma or chronic lung disease‬
➢  16% diabetes‬
➢  10% current smokers‬
➢    7% pregnant‬

An analysis of 99 of the 127 U.S. residents who have already died of Swine Flu shows that 87 of them suffered underlying conditions:

➢  11% had asthma‬
➢  24% had other lung diseases‬
➢  13% had diabetes‬.
➢  11% were morbidly obese‬
➢  34% were obese‬

TRAVELLING WITH FACE MASKS

According to the CDC, it's not clear how effective face masks actually are at preventing the transmission of the H1N1 or seasonal influenza viruses. The same is true for respirators worn snugly over the face as filters. The CDC doesn't recommend face masks or respirators in most settings except if you're at high risk of severe illness from influenza and are caring for someone who has a flu-like illness, or for high-risk people who can't avoid being in a crowded setting where the swine flu virus is likely to be present.

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO BE PROTECTED FROM GETTING SICK? There is no vaccine available just yet (in progress) to protect against Swine Flu. You can take these everyday steps to protect your health.

Prevention is better than cure so follow the above-mentioned advice.

IT IS SAFE TO EAT PORK?
One cannot get influenza from properly handled and cooked pork products, so its considered safe to eat.

There is no 100% way to avoid catching Swine Flu unless you live in a bubble, but with common sanitation sense and a few precautions the odds are by far in your favour to avoid this latest virus menace.

Have a healthy summer!
